Ford Small Block Pulley Guide
Ford Small Block Pulleys
The early Ford pulleys have a 3 bolt pattern on the crankshaft while the later model ones have a 4 bolt pattern. The change over year is generally 1969 for passenger cars and 1977 for pick-up trucks and Broncos. The next most important thing when selecting the right Ford pulley kit is to identify whether you have the short or long water pump. We have found that the easiest way to identify your water pump is to look at which side the lower radiator hose outlet is on (passenger or drivers side).

Ford 289 Hi-Po Engines
The Ford Hi-Po small block engines have a special water pump, timing cover and balancer.
HiPo Water pump: The K-Code water pump is 5.16" tall (vs 5.42"or 5.7" tall for the standard Ford water pumps). When using a K-Code water pump you need to also use a matching High-Po timing chain cover which is approx. 2.5" thick to ensure proper pulley alignment. (the standard timing cover is approx 2.1" thick). This will bring you back to the correct dimensions to use our SBFE series pulleys.
HiPo Balancer: The Ford HiPo Harmonic Balancer is approx. 1.8" thick compared to a factory balancer 3 bolt balancer that is 0.75" thick. The best way to get pulley alignment correct is to use our SBFS series pulleys and a 3-4 bolt conversion adapter that is .950" thick (p/n 3-4-SBF-SPACER). Also note that Hi-Po engines are 30.4oz imbalance (24.5 oz damper and 5.9oz counterweight) vs 28 oz for a standard 289 balancer.
