My belt squeals under hard acceleration

A sharp squeal or chirp that only shows up when you get on the throttle is nearly always belt slip. The crank accelerates faster than the belt can hold.
Overview
Short Answer
Under hard throttle, belt squeal is almost always slip, and that is true of a V-belt or a serpentine belt. Use a quality belt, get the tension right (about 1/4″ to 3/8″ of deflection), and use belt dressing as a diagnostic to confirm slip before chasing anything else.
Three things to work through
Look at the belt itself first. A belt that is cracked, worn out or glazed over will squeal no matter how much tension you put on it. Glazing shows up as a shiny, hardened surface on the belt faces. If that is what you have, replace the belt before you adjust anything.
Check for fluid on the belt. Oil, coolant, power steering fluid or anything else that has found its way onto the belt or into a pulley groove will make it slip and squeal. Find the leak and fix it, then replace the belt, because a contaminated belt does not come back.
Use a quality belt. We recommend Gates or Dayco rather than a bargain brand. On a high torque engine the belt is doing real work.
Check that the alternator pivot and adjustment slot allow enough tension. The belt should deflect only about 1/4″ to 3/8″. If you have run out of adjustment slot, that is your answer.
Use belt dressing as a test, not a fix. Apply a light coat. If the noise stops, that confirms pure slip rather than a misalignment problem, which tells you where to spend your time.
If tension is right and it still squeals: look at the crank pulley
When tension and belt quality both check out, the next thing to verify is that the crank pulley is running true. Spin the engine over by hand and watch the pulley face, or set up a dial indicator on it if you have one.
A crank pulley running off center changes the effective belt path twice per revolution, which shows up as belt stretch and a chirp that no amount of tension adjustment will cure. The usual cause is the register the pulley mounts to on the harmonic damper, so that is worth measuring before you replace anything else.
If it is a V-belt, the permanent fix
A V-belt has a hard limit on how much torque it will transmit without slipping. Sometimes a V-belt simply is not enough for the combination, and no amount of tension or belt quality changes that. On a big power build the durable answer is a serpentine conversion: more belt wrap, an automatic tensioner, and no adjustment slot to run out of.
